Jean-Michel Tijerina (New York)
Jean-Michel Tijerina founded Child Education International (formerly the Cambodia Project), a nonprofit organization that partners with local NGOs, schools and communities to bring quality education and health care to developing communities across Southeast Asia, Haiti, and Eastern Africa (www.ChildEd.org). Inspired from a visit to Cambodia in 2006 where he saw a need for improved infrastructure and a focus on secondary education, he has since coursed his life to social enterprise and development. Jean-Michel’s greatest satisfaction lies in traveling across the globe to develop fresh experiences and create new opportunities while impacting the lives of others – children in particular. This is his second visit to Sri Lanka, both times with Eric Lyons and Hope For the Silent Voices.
Lisa Stern (New York & Arizona)
Twenty years of Lisa’s professional interest have been as an entrepreneur. She has directed her path towards the visual arts and fashion industries which has created a platform to meet and work with creative individuals. These life experiences have fostered a broad worldly perspective. However, her personal sentiment has been deeply ingrained in the philanthropic realms of global awareness. Her heart strings are particularly attuned when it comes to children, nature, and animals. She spends her personal time traveling internationally pursuant there of. Lisa truly embraces humanity, the integral meaning of “change,” and the wisdom to accept many walks of life; thus is inspired to live beyond the barriers of conventional conditioning and cultivate a free spirit.
David Mykel (Whistler, British Columbia)
David A. Mykel is returning from a 6 month trip in Whistler British Columbia and currently taking a sabbatical from his 10 year career in jury consulting. He was born in Utica, NY and has lived in New York, Washington DC as well as Dallas, TX before embarking on this trip (his first to Asia and for a charity). His interests include snowboarding, rock climbing, Muay Thai, wakeboarding, surfing and traveling.
David’s main motivation for taking this trip is to continue his journey in self exploration and perspective as well as positively impacting the lives of others –“ something I have learned from good friend and founder of
Hope For the Silent Voices, Eric Lyons.”
Justin Shearin (Dallas)
Born in Dallas Texas in 1980, Justin is a wine sommelier and restaurant manager. Justin notes his reason for trip as “taking this trip to further my perspective in this world. To make me realize how fortunate we are to have the things we have and try to spread the joy of life to those who can’t relate to that joy.” His hobbies include: Sports, wine, traveling, and charity work.
Brandi Shearin (Dallas)
Brandi is a Texas native and a graduate of Texas Tech University and Baylor College of Dentistry. She is a practicing dental hygienist in the Dallas area where she lives with her husband Justin. This is Brandi’s first trip to Asia and is looking forward to experiencing and witnessing the many things that will push her out of her comfort zone. This impact trip is the first step in Brandi and Justin’s journey to travel the world and broaden horizons. She wants attain a more realistic view of the world in order to better appreciate the things that we as Americans take for granted. She spends time with friends and family cooking, camping, rock climbing, snow skiing, and practicing yoga. Overall she wants to be the most interesting woman in the world!
Eric Lyons (Chicago)
Eric is a co-founder of Hope For the Silent Voices and currently globetrotting in search of dire needs in desperate places. Living by the credo that “we are responsible for what we know to be true,” he is always on the lookout for great people to collaborate with in impacting the world around us.
